What to know about Georgian bank statements

Bank statements in Georgia are often bilingual. Headings and transaction descriptions can be in Georgian script, in English, or both on the same line, depending on the bank, the channel the statement came from and the language chosen in internet banking. We read Georgian text as it is and keep it in the export, so a description that matches a payee in your records still matches after conversion. Dates are written day first, usually as DD.MM.YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY.

Multi-currency accounts are common. A single account number can hold balances in lari, US dollars and euros, and a statement may list them in separate sections or mix them in one table with a currency column. Each currency is checked against its own opening and closing balance, and the Excel file gives each currency its own sheet. Bank of Georgia, for example, prints one amount column per currency and no running balance, so we rebuild each currency from its start and end balance. A conversion between your own currencies shows up as two rows, one leaving the first currency and one arriving in the second.

Descriptions tend to be long and structured. A transfer can include the name of the other party, the purpose of the payment as the sender typed it and their account number. Georgian account numbers are IBANs of 22 characters: GE, two check digits, a two-letter bank code such as TB for TBC Bank, and 16 digits. Card payments add the merchant and often the original currency amount. Layouts differ: TBC prints separate Paid Out and Paid In columns with a running balance, while Bank of Georgia uses signed amounts. Statements can be downloaded from internet banking or the mobile app; the PDF is the version most often requested as a formal record, and the bank pages below describe how to get each one.
